Each time I installed a OS and installed Nvidia proprietary drivers, I had enough difficulties to setup for a dual display - cos - when mirrored displays were used - both TV and Monitor would end up only with 1024x768 resolution. It seems that xrandr is not very good at handling dual monitors in --same-as configuration, when the monitors do not have the same resolution. Appart from falling back to highest common resolution of both monitors (such resolution might not be satisfying or might not even exist), a workaround is to use the --scale option. 1440p + 4k dual monitor setup So I had a 4k setup for a while but I think the 60hz refresh and it's lighting was hell on my eyes so I replaced it with a 1440p freesync display about a year ago.

I ran xrandr and it showed me that my laptop display, eDP-1, is connected but for some reason my HDMI port is called DP-1, and it's shown as disconnected, even when I have a monitor attached. How do I fix this?

Yes, I would tend to agree in hindsight... Perhaps the following will be more helpful. I just got a new laptop which I'm using Mint KDE 7 (which I believe is equiv. to Ubuntu 9.04?) with dual monitors. I am trying to setup dual head through DisplayPort (MTS) using an NVidia GTX 760. I have two identical monitors from ViewSonic but both X-server and xrandr are interpreting only one monitor correctly and the other falling back into an unacceptable default. .
